Olunga assist ends Al Arabi win drought
In Summary

Michael Olunga set up the winner as Al Arabi beat Al Wakra 1-0 at Al Janoub Stadium, ending a month without victory and lifting the QSL side to fifth place on 20 points.

Michael Olunga produced a moment of class to end Al Arabi’s month-long drought, teeing up the only goal as the QSL side edged Al Wakra 1-0 at Al Janoub Stadium on Wednesday, 7 January. The Harambee Stars captain, who played 89 minutes, delivered the decisive pass that allowed Spanish forward Rodri to fire home from a razor-thin angle, handing Al Arabi a much-needed morale-boosting victory.

The Moment That Broke the Spell

In the 39th minute Olunga controlled a high ball with the poise of a seasoned striker, then threaded a crisp, measured pass into the path of Rodri. The Spaniard’s finish was emphatic and clinical, and it proved to be the match-winner — the single strike that snapped a run of poor results and finally returned three points to the club’s ledger.

Personal Milestone for the Captain

The assist marked Olunga’s first goal involvement since 23 November, when he netted a brace against Qatar SC. While he registered two shots in the match (none on target), his influence was felt in the build-up play: two key passes and a 73% pass accuracy inside the opposition half underlined his role as both creator and leader on the pitch.

End of a Rough Patch for Al Arabi

Al Arabi had not tasted victory since 6 December, when they beat Al Khor 4-3 in the QSL Cup. A pair of league defeats and a 2-2 draw with Al Rayyan on 28 December left the team searching for form — until Olunga’s composed contribution restored confidence and momentum.

What Comes Next

The win lifts Al Arabi to fifth place with 20 points from 12 matches, and gives Olunga fresh hope of ending his personal goal drought. The Kenyan captain will have a prime opportunity to find the net when Al Arabi host league leaders Al Gharafa on Thursday, 15 January — a showdown that promises to test both his scoring touch and the team’s renewed belief.
